2012 Iowa State Turkey Calling Championships

2012 Iowa State Turkey Calling Championship
1st Rick White, 2nd Jim Fink, 3rd Curtis Goettsch

Well it’s in the books and it was an event to remember, for the 1st time a Turkey Calling Contest was streamed LIVE over the web. Callers from all over the Midwest made their way from Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, and, of course, Iowa to the Delaware County Community Center in Manchester, Iowa for the annual event.

For the seventh straight year I finished in the top 3 of the Iowa State Championships. I also had a personal best finish in the Owl Hooting division placing 1st, winning my first ever Owl Hooting Championship, this Victory didn’t come easy, I had some great competition in this division. It included past winner Rick White of Hunter Specialties, Jim Fink, a past winner, also a 5th place winner at the Grand Nationals, Jim is also a Mossy Oak Prostaff member. My biggest competition going into the Owl Hooting I felt, was Shane Simpson of Hooks Game Calls, he and I just last spring finished One – Two at the Mid-Iowa Classic, with the edge going to Shane.

2012 Iowa Owl Hooting:
1st Curtis Goettsch, 2nd Jim Fink, 3rd Rick White

I had been putting in more time with my friction calls then I had in years past and to my surprise it paid off with a 3rd place finish. Doug Herman a great friction caller punched his ticket to the big dance in Nashville, TN.

What Big Dance?… Grand National Calling Contests (GNCC)- Recognized as the leader in wild turkey conservation and hunting, it is only natural that the NWTF also serves as the leading sanctioning body for turkey calling contests. At each contest, entrants compete with one another before a panel of judges as they attempt to reproduce the many calls of the wild turkey. Here, hunters and turkey enthusiasts from all over North America, whether competing in local contests or the Wild Turkey Bourbon/NWTF Grand National Calling Championships, take turkey calling to a new level.

Shane Simpson got one of his biggest wins to date winning the Senior Open Championship, a first for him and also got him a ticket to the GNCC in Nashville. Great Calling Shane!

Manchester, IA – August 19, 2012 (Shane Simpson)
The 2012 Iowa State Turkey Calling Championships is in the books and as always, it was a great event with a great turnout as well. Callers from Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska and, of course, Iowa descended on the Delaware County Community Center in Manchester, Iowa for the annual event. A first for this year’s event was the fact that it was streamed “Live” right here at CallingAllTurkeys.com and as far as I know, is the first time any turkey calling contest has been broadcast live. The added pressure of a live audience didn’t seem to affect the competitors as they yelped, gobbled and hooted their way across the stage and a few new champions were crowned.
