Hunting is my passion, as I can imagine it is the passion for most everyone here. I was born with this drive to pursue wild game, to harvest an animal and bring to my table the meat provided. Ever since I was old enough to remember I have been hunting. Growing up in Dallas, Texas with a father who has a passion for the outdoors I can remember long sits in the deer blind, the pre-dawn hours nestled into the tall milo fields waiting on the first signs of doves and of course the great fishing that the lakes around our house provided.

Women Hunters Part 1: Comfort

It’s no lie when I tell you that women are one of the fastest growing numbers in hunting sports today. This was not the case ten years ago. Though hunting is still male dominated, I am pleased to see this growing trend. Many women are getting into the sport due to their husbands or boyfriends introducing them to hunting, many others still are wanting to provide fresh, organic meat to their families and some yet have a love and respect for wildlife and strive for that deeper connection with nature.
But being a women can be a challenge when it comes to hunting. Sometimes the logical idea when just starting into something is to save money in as many ways as possible. This includes saving money when it comes to purchasing a weapon and hunting clothing. But these are two areas that I feel do not need to be overlooked, as comfort and your shooting weapon are the two most important aspects when it comes to clothing. If your clothing does not fit properly then your comfort is at jeopardy, resulting in less time enjoying your hunt and more time trying to get comfortable. If your weapon, say a bow, is not tailored for you the ending result could be a missed shot or worse, a wounded animal.
In this first of a two part series, we shall start with clothing. Women buy cloths tailored for them in their everyday lives, so why overlook the necessity for comfortable clothing when hunting? There are many companies today who not only tailor their clothing for men but also for women. A great example is Lacrosse Footwear, who make great hunting boots for both men and women. Their attention to detail is top notch and their dedication to hunter comfort is one that cannot be beat. My Lacrosse Footwear is the Alphaburly Pro, a high quality, scent free rubber hunting boot that has kept my feet more than dry and warm. I have worn these boots during the hottest portion of the early archery season all the way into the coldest part of Missouri’s late archery season. They are comfortable, quite and affordable even for the beginner just getting started.
Another thing to look for is clothing in general. You would not wear your husband or boyfriends clothing on a night out, so why would you wear their hunting clothing on a hunt? There are many great companies who sell hunting clothing just for women. Mossy Oak is a prime example. They have a clothing line tailored for the hunting woman. With shirts, pants, hats, cold gear and even base layers made for a woman’s frame. They are a company who strive for customer satisfaction, have great customer service, amazing and comfortable clothing and are easy on the bank account Heck, you can even find turkey vests now that are tailored for women.
Part two will focus on women’s choices when it comes to hunting weapons. We are living in an amazing world with the wonderful opportunity to pursue wild game. I am thrilled to see that women participation in hunting is rising. It is never too late to get involved in hunting. Men and women, if you have young children, especially young girls, take them out with you on a hunt. Women, if you have always had a desire to learn how to hunt never hesitate to ask. Social media is a great way to get involved with hunting. Good luck and keep an eye out for part two.
