As a young boy growing up in the Loess Hills of Iowa, I was naturally drawn to the outdoors. With most of my free time spent hunting or fishing, I developed a passion for whitetails.

Western Iowa Morel Report

photo 1On April 28th I received a report that a few morels were found along the Missouri River. So with a few hours to kill I went out an checked for myself an was pleased at what I found. There were a few mushrooms that were 3 inches tall but for the most part they were still the small grey ones. I had to cover a lot of ground to find that one tree that had more than just a couple mushrooms around it. Once I finally did walk up to a dead cottonwood tree I could see clusters of mushrooms all around the tree with a few scattered around.

I ended up picking just over three pounds an headed for home. Now I’ll wait a few days untill they start to pop in the hills around my house.. Mushroom hunting is a great outdoor activity for families an kids. My wife an kids love to go mushroom hunting with me an absolutely love to eat those tasty little guys. Stay tuned to Victory Outdoors for my upcoming mushroom report.. This should be a great year for this delicious fungi!!
