Growing up hunting has taught me many life qualities, such as patients, determination, vigor, and even humility. Hunting is something that gets into your blood and will never come out, but for me it is more than that.

Trail Cams: Better Late than Never

1After last year’s events from hunting season I have been waiting to get my trail cams out. Seeing all the up and coming deer, watching them grow, and hoping the big ones make it through the winter has me biting my nails every time you look at the pictures.

When the antlers drop and shed hunting begins, it’s a huge tool to see what bucks made it through the winter, and what poor fellows didn’t. That feeling of finding monster sheds of a deer that you didn’t even know was on the property is an outstanding feeling. But that feeling of finding the sheds of a hit list buck, well those words are difficult to come by. It is a huge relief, since of accomplishment, yet motivation to get the job done this year.

2Through the past few months I have not been able to get out much. I have been hung up at work and all the other curveballs life throws at you. But that doesn’t mean I was not thinking and working on my scouting. I spend a lot of time talking to people around the area finding out what sheds they have found, where they found them, and what deer they see currently. I talk to the landowners about the crops and any new details on the properties. But ultimately I spend a ton of time on Google maps. Checking the bedding areas, cover, water ways, and food to see where these deer will go. Help me understand where the deer I see at the off season go during the cold months. Mostly it keeps me on the edge of my seat waiting to get back out there.

Setting the cameras in spots where I had them last year is always exciting. When you walk in and see where the deer paw and dig where your food has been is very self-fulfilling. More and more I use Monster Raxx, I don’t see myself ever switching to anything else. The deer continue to come back to the same area as well as are healthier and have very developed antlers.

I’m very excited to see what the cameras capture over the next few weeks. Hopefully some of the bucks are back and my hit list grows bigger and better!!
