Picking a New Puppy Part II

TYS - CAM00437Okay we talked about ways to choose a breeder for your next Picking a New Puppy selection now let’s talk about how to chose the best pup that best fits your needs. You really need to identify the traits you want in your pup. Look at things like your family size and age of your kids, the terrain you are hunting, the amount of hunting you will actually do (Be honest about this!! Alot of good dogs were wasted with good intentions!), is the pup a hunter or pet or both simple questions like these will help you make the right choice.

TYS - CAM00444We have already talked about trusting your breeder and their opinion of the pups. Which is the most out going ,Which one has a desire to please , which one is laid back and shy. You see dogs are much like people as they all have different personalities and drives. Some will have a desire to charge in and others will work slowly and patiently as they go.

TYS - 20150402_113826It is best in my opinion to go and see the pups in person. We have sold our pups over the internet with very good luck. But if you are truly wanting this dog to be your best friend then you need to go meet it in person and see how they react to you and your family. Most pups that have been handled will love to be around you but take time to watch what they do when they are with the other pups are they the most outgoing are they curious, are they hunting with their nose???

We have had several people chose ups and honestly it amazes me how they decide which pup to take. We had on family insist on holding the pups upside down to see which one would stay there the longest without whining. We had another family flip a coin. We have had people say we want the biggest or the smallest. In our last litter the pup I personally would have taken ended up being the last one we sold. He is now being trained to hunt Pheasants in Nebraska. The bottom line is make the choice a serious one do your homework and learn the pups you are choosing from then make the best choice you can.

TYS - silver male green collarI have in my life been blessed with some great dogs a couple which simply the last ones available but they shined and were amazing pets and hunters for me!!!!
