Late Season Card Pull

Getting Back into the Groove

This season has been really tough on me mentally. I didn’t hunt as much as I normally do, and although I saw several shooter bucks on their feet in early November, they either weren’t in range or were on the wrong side of the fence, and none of them responded favorably to calling. By the time Thanksgiving rolled around I was burned out and ready for a break. I hunted with my normal group during the first shotgun season and we were able fill our freezers with several deer, so the pressure to provide food for the family has eased and I’m hoping that will take some stress out of the late seasons. I am still carrying my anysex archery tag and a pair of antlerless archery tags, plus my anysex late muzzleloader tag, so I have plenty of options. I headed out to the farm last weekend to pull a couple cameras to use for my carcass cam, and pull the other cards to see what had been happening in the woods over the last month. I was happy to have a lot of pictures to sort through, and there were quite a few pictures of bucks working scrapes and fighting late into November.

I was disappointed as I walked up to my last camera and saw it dangling from the tree. I wondered what could have caused it to move, but figured it out when I opened the case and there was no SD card in the slot. On the bright side, whoever stole my card didn’t take the camera, but it still irritates me that someone would mess with my stuff. This camera is located far enough from the road and isn’t attached to any large tracts of timber so my guess is the thief must have come from the river, which is less than 100 yards from the camera site. My streak of hunting this property for 11 years with zero problems was now over. There are several other people who are allowed access to this property, and I’ve had pictures of most of them on a camera a time or two, but up until this point everyone has respected each other’s property. I talked with the land owner and let him know what happened and he said he would keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. There is a stand set less than 50 yards from this camera and it wasn’t disturbed, so I can only assume the culprit shouldn’t have been there and wanted to make sure they weren’t busted by the camera.

IMAG0087Losing that card and the weeks of pictures over that scrape was a definite downer, and I wish I could just have the card back to see what I missed, but the other cameras didn’t disappoint at all. It didn’t take long to get right back to pre-season excitement levels seeing all the bucks roaming the property. As far as I know only one buck I’ve had on camera this year isn’t around anymore, as he was found dead during the first gun season on the neighbor’s property. All the rest of these bucks I believe are still alive. The late season runs until January 10, but with the family holiday schedule and work I’ve probably only got about six days of hunting left. Hopefully I will be able to make a couple of them count.
